{"Spruce Pine," built between the River and the mountainside became the commercial center for the entire mountain area, shortly after the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railroad made its way through the region.
Spruce Pine is known as a mining town because of the areas large concentration of feldspar and mica. The mining of Mica and Feldspar was only small scale until 1908 when the Harris Clay & Mining Company and several other large mining companies came to town, at which
time mining became the town's financial viability.Spruce Pine has a more concentrated area of feldspar than any other area on earth and accounts for 60% of the United States production of the mineral. Feldspar is used in bathroom fixtures, ceramic tile, paint, dinnerware, electrical wiring devices, art ware (pottery and ceramics), fiberglass insulation, and glass containers. Nearly 100% of the United States and the world's supply of ultra-pure quartz, which is used in the manufacture of fused quartz apparatus used in the production of semi-conductors and computer chips, come from the Spruce Pine area. Furthermore, the region is dotted with neat gemstone mines where visitors can mine their own gemstones and have them cut right on site, adding to the towns recognition worldwide as the Gem and Mineral Capital of North Carolina.
Additional fascinating attributes of Spruce Pine include the North Toe River that borders the town. North Toe River gets bigger and bigger as it makes its way into Tennessee where it becomes the Nolichucky.The river is very popular with numerous outdoorsmen who fish, swim, raft and kayak from Spruce Pine to Erwin TN. World renowned Penland School of Art adds further appeal to Spruce Pine enhancing it with numerous artists and art studios. The town is also centrally located between Asheville NC and Boone NC, in a valley surrounded by the highest mountain peaks east of the Rocky Mountains.Countless tourists visit and pass through this area to take advantage of Ski Resorts and winter sports, or to escape the heat and congestion of the cities.}
